Selected as one of the ten greatest backs in UA history in 1915. Was a star halfback on the 1914 football team and led Arizona to a 7-6 victory over Pomona for the Southwest Championship, the UA's first football championship. Selected All-Southwest two times, captain in 1915. Was a key member of squad that defeated Occidental College and inspired Los Angeles Times correspondent Bill Henry to write the UA team "showed the fight of wildcats," beginning the Wildcat tradition. A versatile athlete, he lettered in basketball, tennis, baseball and track and field. Captain in both football and basketball. Pitched Arizona's first no-hitter, a 5-1 victory over Tempe Normal (ASU) in 1915. In 1916, set U of A state and western record in 100-yard dash (10:00 sec.); also set U of A record in the 200 (23 1/5 sec.). Was also southwest champion in the running broad jump (21' 1/2"). Served as an assistant football coach in 1919-20 and was the UA 's head baseball coach in 1921, with an 18-5 record. In 1958, J.F. "Pop" McKale called him "the finest all-around athlete in the history of the University of Arizona."
