TUCSON- The University of Arizona Wildcats No. 12 men's and No. 13 women's track and field teams will conclude the indoor season with the NCAA Indoor Championships on March 8-9. They will be hosted by the University of Arkansas and held at Randal Tyson Track Center in Fayetteville, Ark. On Friday, the field events begin at 12:30 p.m. CST and the track events start at 5:30 p.m. Saturday's field events will commence at 2 p.m. and the track events begin at 6 p.m. In 2012, the women's squad managed to finish in 11th place at the NCAA Championships. On the men's side, the squad finished in third place at the NCAA Championships, the best indoor finish in school history.
On the men's side, No. 12 Arizona will compete against No. 1 Arkansas, No. 2 Florida, No. 3 Texas A&M, No. 4 Wisconsin and No. 5 Oregon among many others. On the women's side, No. 13 Arizona will compete against No. 1 LSU, No. 2 Kansas, No. 3 Arkansas, No. 4 Oregon and No. 5 Texas A&M to name a few.
In the 2013 USTFCCCA week seven national poll, the Arizona men went from No. 15 to No. 12 while the women stayed in the No. 13 spot. Three other Pac-12 schools join the Arizona men in the national poll. Oregon is fifth, Arizona State is 16th and Stanford is 21st. On the women's side, Arizona is accompanied by two other Pac-12 schools. Oregon is No. 4 and Arizona State is No. 14.
On the men's side, senior Edgar Rivera-Morales will compete in the men's high jump on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. CST. Rivera-Morales has reached the NCAA Indoor Championships each of the four years he has competed. In 2012, Rivera-Morales earned a seventh-place finish and All-America accolades at the NCAA Indoor Championships with a mark of 7-2.5 (2.19m). At the 2011 NCAA Championships, Rivera-Morales also earned All-America honors, jumping 7-2.5 again and finishing in sixth place. His personal-best clearance of 7-5 (2.26m) is currently tied for the sixth-best mark in the country.
Junior Lawi Lalang is entered in the mile and the 3,000-meter race. Lalang currently holds the No. 1 collegiate time in the country in the 3,000-meter race. His personal-best time of 7:42.79 at the Razorback Invitational was good for a first-place finish and he broke his own school record. The impressive time ranks as the third-best in collegiate history and the fastest by a collegian since 2004. Lalang also holds the No. 2 time in the country for the mile. He broke his own school record in the event at the Millrose Games with a personal-best time of 3:54.56. That time is also the third-best time in collegiate history in the event. The preliminary round of the mile is on Friday at 5:45 p.m. CST. The 3,000-meter race is set to start at 7: 55 p.m. on Saturday. At the 2012 NCAA Indoor Championships, Lalang claimed titles in the 3,000-meter race and 5,000-meter race.
On the women's side, senior Georganne Moline will compete at the NCAA Indoor Championships for the first time in her career. The preliminary round of the 400-meter race will commence on Friday at 6:25 p.m. CST. Moline's time of 52.38 (altitude adjustment) currently ranks as the seventh-best time in the country.
Senior Jen Bergman is set to run the 5,000-meter race on Friday at 7:55 p.m. CST. This is the first time Bergman has competed at the NCAA Indoor Championships in her four-year career. Bergman's personal-best time of 15:55.60 ranks as the No. 14 time in the country this year.
Senior Brigetta Barrett will compete in the women's high jump on Friday at 3:15 p.m. CST. Barrett has reached the NCAA Indoor Championships for the fourth time in her career. She has earned All-America honors in each of her previous trips to the NCAA Indoor Championships. Barrett claimed first-place finishes in 2011 and 2012. She is currently tied for the best mark in the country at 6-3.25 (1.91m).
The Wildcats will have two women in the shot put competition that takes place on Saturday at 4 p.m. CST. Senior Julie Labonté will be competing at the NCAA Indoor Championships for the fourth time in her career. In 2012, she earned a third-place finish; she won the competition in 2011 and finished in 12th in 2010. Her season-best toss of 57-4.75 (17.49m) ranks No. 4 in the country. Junior Alyssa Hasslen is competing in the NCAA Indoor Championships for the second time of her career. Prior to redshirting in 2012, Hasslen took 17th place in 2011. Hasslen's personal-best toss of 57-4.25 (17.48m) is the fifth-best mark in the country this year.
ESPN3 will stream the meet live on March 8 from 6:30 p.m.-10:30 p.m. ET and March 9 from 7 p.m.-9:30 p.m. ET.
