THIS WEEK: Seventeenth-ranked Arizona (27-14, 4-5 Pac-12) continues its five-game road trip on which it will play five games in six days in two different cities. The Cats head to Eugene to take on seventh-ranked Oregon (33-6, 10-2 Pac-12) for a three-game series. Arizona split a doubleheader with New Mexico State in Las Cruces on Tuesday.
After Sunday’s matchup, the Wildcats will have played 16 games in 23 days, including eight games on the road.
Arizona split its doubleheader with the Aggies on Tuesday. The Cats left 16 runners on base in the doubleheader, including six in scoring position in a 3-2 loss. Chelsea Goodacre hit a three-run homer in the Wildcats’ game-two, 8-1 victory.
Oregon has won 26 of its last 29 games, including 10 of its 12 Pac-12 games. The Ducks swept 15th-ranked Stanford and Utah, and took 2-of-3 from No. 15 Washington and No. 4 California. UO combines a great offense with a brilliant pitching staff. The Ducks hit .343 as a team while limiting opponents to a .192 clip. Four players have batting averages over .400 (Alexa Peterson - .466, Janie Takeda - .451, Alyssa Gillespie - .450, Courtney Ceo - .405) and Oregon’s three pitchers have ERAs under 2.00 (Jessica Moore - 1.42, Cheridan Hawkins - 1.46, Karissa Hovinga - 1.66).
The Wildcats lead the all-time series with the Ducks 80-17, but have dropped each of the last two series, both in Tucson. The Ducks beat the Cats 11-7 and 12-7 in games 1 and 2 last season before the Cats avoided the sweep with a 5-4, eight-inning victory.
Arizona has five Pac-12 series remaining, three of which are on the road and four of which are against teams currently in the top 20.
