Wildcat Soccer Edges New Mexico, 3-2 :: <!--REPLACE WITH STORY TITLE TEASER--> Wildcat Soccer Edges New Mexico, 3-2

TUCSON, Ariz. -- A two-goal performance from junior forward Chrissy Sanford (Newbury Park, CA/Newbury HS) gave the Wildcats the edge they needed to register a first-ever win over New Mexico, 3-2, at home on Sunday in front of a crowd of 624 at Murphey Stadium.

New Mexico scored its first goal early in the contest, when junior Jayme Dieringer's shot bounced off the cross bar and landed at the feet of fellow junior Lee Morris, who sent the ball into the back of the net. The Cats scored the equalizer at the 24-minute mark, as Sanford ran the ball through the Lobo defense to knot the score.

UNM again took the lead at 37:04 after sophomore Danielle Pecastaing sent a shot in from just outside the upper left corner of the box. The Cats caught up with the Lobos again with less than two minutes remaining in the first half, with sophomore defender Cassidy Guinn (Phoenix, AZ/Shadow Mountain HS) slotting the ball to fellow sophomore Tiffany Sabado (Kaneohe, HI/James B. Castle HS) for a short breakaway goal.

The Cats came out firing in the second half, putting five shots on goal before finally connecting on the gamewinner. Sanford notched her second goal of the contest, and her second multiple-goal performance of the young season, when she again dribbled through the UNM defense and hit the back of the net at 73:29.

The Wildcats outshot the Lobos, 19-9, including an 11-2 ratio in the second half alone. UNM goalkeeper Shelly Hammock was kept busy during the game, making seven saves. The UA used both of its goalkeepers, with sophomore Shannon Monti (Phoenix, AZ/Shadow Mountain HS) seeing her first collegiate start and giving up both first-half goals. Junior Inger Airheart (Roseville, CA/Oakmont HS) played the entire second half.

Arizona improves its record to 2-1-0 overall, while New Mexico slips to 1-3-0 overall. Up next for the Wildcats is a trip to Provo, Utah, where they will play Wisconsin-Milwaukee in a neutral contest on Saturday, Sept. 11, at 4 p.m. MDT. The Cats face Brigham Young there on Monday, Sept. 13, at 4 p.m. MDT.
