TUCSON, Ariz.-Senior shortstop Nick Day, a transfer from Stanford,
collected three hits and drove in four runs, leading Brigham Young to its
first victory of the year, a 15-9 triumph over No. 19 Arizona here Monday
afternoon.
The Cougars improved to 1-4 on the season, while the Cats fell to 4-3.
BYU scored in each of its final eight at-bats and posted multiple runs in
five straight innings from the third to the seventh. All nine starters
collected at least one hit. The top four batters in the lineup went
11-for-18 with nine runs scored and six RBI.
Sophomore left-hander Jeff Stone (1-0) earned the win for the Cougars,
striking out five in 5.1 innings. Senior southpaw Tony Milo (1-1) allowed
12 hits over 4.0 innings, taking the loss for Arizona.
For the Cats, junior third baseman Erik Torres extended his career-long
hitting streak to 13 with a single and a home run. Freshman designated
hitter Matt Abram singled, doubled and tripled. Junior right-hander Kevin
Huff worked 2.0 innings of relief in his first appearance since Feb. 25,
1997, having come back from a shoulder injury.
