Box Score
TUCSON, Ariz.-San Francisco senior right-hander Jeff Bowman's bases loaded
wild pitch in the bottom of the ninth allowed senior catcher Mike Meyer to
score the winning run as No. 19 Arizona rallied from a 3-0 deficit to
defeat the Dons, 4-3, here Friday afternoon.
The Cats improved to 3-1 on the year, while USF fell to 0-2.
Arizona was shut down over 7.0 innings by San Francisco starter Ian Perio.
The senior southpaw, a transfer from Arizona State, held the Cats scoreless
while striking out 10 and walking no one. However the bullpen, hurt by poor
defense, could not hold the lead.
The Cats tied the game with three runs in the eighth, two of which were
unearned after sophomore first baseman Jesse Foppert dropped a foul pop
with two outs. Senior pinch-hitter Rob Shabansky collected his first hit
since May 3, 1998, tying the game with run-scoring single.
In the ninth, Meyer led off with a double off senior right-hander Jeff
Bowman (0-1) and advanced to third when senior center fielder Dustin
Delucchi bobbled the ball. After a pair of intentional walks, Meyer scored
on Bowman's wild pitch.
Senior lefty Tony Milo earned the win with 4.1 innings of three-hit relief,
allowing just one unearned run. Milo has not allowed an earned run in 8.1
innings of work this year.
Junior third baseman Tag Bozied homered and singled for the Dons. Arizona's
junior third baseman, Erik Torres, extended his career-best hitting streak
to 10 with a pair of singles.
Arizona and San Francisco will meet again in the second game of the series
Saturday at 1 p.m. at Sancet Field
