General: Coming off a tremendous first year of college basketball
that saw him become just the second freshman in Arizona history to score
500 or more points in a season... Averaged 15.4 points per game and finished
10th in the conference scoring race... Scored in double figures in 31 of
Arizona's 34 games, including the final 19 in a row... Had eight 20-point
games... A member of the Pacific-10 Conference All-Freshman first team
and was a Basketball Times Freshman All-America second team selection...
An athletic combo-guard who can play any one of the three perimeter positions...
Possesses great one-on-one skills... In addition to his offensive exploits,
he might be the team's best defensive player... Was third in the Pac-10
in steals (2.1), and his 71 thefts were the second-highest total ever for
an Arizona freshman (Mike Bibby had 76)... Along with point guard and roommie
Jason Gardner, he helps give the Wildcats one of the top backcourts in
the country.
1999-00 (Freshman): One of two freshman in the UA backcourt,
he averaged 15.4 ppg, 4.1 rpg and 2.1 apg while starting in 31 of the UA's
34 games at the two-guard position... Shot .750 from the free throw line
(111-148)... All-Pac-10 Freshman Team performer and an All-Pac-10 honorable
mention selection... Averaged 16.9 ppg in Pac-10 games and a team-best
18.5 ppg in the NCAA Tournament... In the final 10 games of the season,
he averaged 20.1 ppg... Netted a career-high 29 points at home against
Arizona State (10-20 FGA/9-10 FTA)... Played a major role in limiting future
Pac-10 Player of the Year Eddie House to just seven points (3-15 FGA)...
In the first meeting of the season with Arizona State, he scored 24 points
and had eight rebounds in Tempe... Once again, helped shut down House,
who had just eight points (4-14 FGA)... Matched a then-career-high with
24 points at Washington State, going 11-of-14 from the floor... Also had
five rebounds, four assists and three steals... Led the team in scoring
10 times and went for a team-best 21 in the season ending loss to Wisconsin
in the NCAA Tournament... Scored 16 points in the first round win over
Jackson State... Named Most Valuable Player of the Preseason NIT after
leading Arizona to the championship... Had 20 points, five steals and four
rebounds in the championship game victory over Kentucky... Scored 15 points
in the semifinal win over Notre Dame... Scored 23 points against UCLA in
Tucson and went for 22 in the regular season finale win over California
in Tucson.
High School: Attended Grant High School in Van Nuys, Calif. where
he was a three-time Valley Pac-8 Player of the Year... Three-time All-Los
Angeles City Team as well... Grant High School's all-time leading scorer
with 2,124 points... Averaged 33.4 ppg as a senior, 29.8 ppg as a junior
and 22.5 ppg as a sophomore... Los Angeles Times San Fernando Valley Player
of the Year award winner as a senior... Played for head coach Howard Levine,
who said of Arenas, he the best offensive player that's been in this Valley,
maybe forever... Was one of the two recruits inked by Arizona during the
early signing period, joining Jason Gardner... Was listed as the No. 4
shooting guard in the country by Prep Star Magazine and was included in
the Orange County Register Best of the West Fab 15... Can present match-up
problems with his athletic ability... Scored 46 points against Conoga Park
as a senior and ended up averaging 33.4 points per game that season...
Slam Magazine Player of the Month for May 1999... Had a tremendous all-around
season as a senior, averaging 33.4 ppg, 7.9 rpg, 3.0 apg, 4.7 spg and 2.0
bpg... As a junior went for 29.8 ppg, 9.1 rpg, 6.1 apg and 4.5 spg... During
his sophomore season, averaged 22.5 ppg, 6.5 rpg, 4.0 apg and 3.2 spg...
In his junior campaign, scored 49 points against Bellarmine-Jefferson...
Also scored 42 points against Crenshaw High School in a state playoff game
that year... Played in the Eddie Jones All-Star Game... Also earned a letter
in track.
Personal: Gilbert Jay Arenas... Born 1-6-82... Son of Gilbert
Arenas... Father is an actor who also works for UPS and also attended the
University of Miami, where he played on the football team (1980) with Jim
Kelly and Otis Anderson... Undecided in his choice of college major...
Plays in a summer basketball league in Venice Beach, where he has gone
up against current NBA players as Kobe Bryant, Chris Childs, Don MacLean
and Tracy Murray... As a 14-year old played for an AAU team that reached
the Final Four out of 86 teams in a tournament in West Virginia... Enjoys
drawing, computer games, movies and walking.
