McKale Memorial Center 40th Anniversary Celebration

Arizona vs. Stanford - Wednesday, February 6, 2013

On February 1, 1973 The University of Arizona opened the McKale Memorial Center with a men's basketball game vs. the Wyoming Cowboys.  The opening of McKale Memorial Center in February of 1973 marked a new era in Wildcat Men's and Women's Basketball, Wrestling, Gymnastics, Women's Volleyball and also concert venue and place of community gathering.

On February 6, 2013 Arizona Athletics celebrated the 40th anniversary of the home of the Wildcats. Industry leader, Blakeway Panorama, agreed to photograph the arena on the special night and will produce a retail panorama print and will create an online interactive gigapixel. To enhance the photo, fans were directed to wear either red, white or blue based on their seating section. We also recognized the top moments that have occurred in the building over the last 40 years by having you, the fans, vote online for your favorite memories, both athletics and non-athletics related.

The #McKale 40 Top 10: 

In celebration of 40 years in the McKale Center we presented our fans the opportunity to vote for the top 10 moments in McKale history.  Here are the top 10, voted on by you, the fans:

1.  February 19, 2011:  First Whiteout/Derrick Williams blocks last second shot vs. Washington

2.  January 20, 1984:  First game game following Steve Kerr's father's assassination vs. ASU.  Moment of silence for Dr. Kerr before game.  When Steve Kerr came in early during first half as a sixth man, he launches 25 footer in front of Lute (no 3 pt line yet) and it found nothing but net.

3.  January 12, 2011: The McKale Center hosts memorial service for the 2011 Tucson shooting victims in which President Barack Obama was the keynote speaker.

4.  February 1989:  Sean Elliott breaks Pac-10 Scoring record

5.  December 30, 1987:   Arizona downs Duke 91-85 in Fiesta Bowl Classic -one of biggest Arizona wins to that date

6.  January 7, 2001: The Bobbi Olson Memorial Service

7.  January 9, 1999:  Richard Jefferson game winning shot downs Washington.  His leap to on the end line tables remains iconic.

8.  Various Dates:  Anytime the Ooh Ahh man hits the Court: A-R-I-Z-O-N-A, ARIZZONA!

9.  October 12, 1976:  "The Eagles" play the McKale Center in front of a sold out crowd.

10.  Write-in vote:  12.15.12 Men's Basketball win vs. Florida caps a historic day in Arizona Athletics history after Football wins the Gildan New Mexico Bowl in dramatic fashion earlier that day.
