Golden Spikes Award Watch List
TUCSON, Ariz. - Arizona baseball junior outfielder Johnny Field was named to the 60-man midseason Golden Spikes Award watch list announced by USA Baseball on Thursday. The award is annually presented to the top amateur baseball player in the country.
A native of Las Vegas, Nev., Field was one of 60 players honored on the organization's preseason list and he is one of 32 players to also be included on the updated list. Arizona junior pitcher Konner Wade was also on the initial watch list.
The reigning Pac-12 batting champion, Field is once again leading the conference with a .382 average and is among the individual leaders in most major statistical categories. He tops the league in on-base percentage (.453), base hits (66), total bases (105) and triples (7), while ranking second in slugging (.607) and runs scored (48). Additionally, Field ranks fourth in both runs batted in (38) and stolen bases (13).
Field took over as the team's leadoff hitter 18 games ago to spark a 13-5 record for the Wildcats, who are now 28-15 overall. During that streak, Field is batting .427 (32-for-75) with 21 runs scored and 18 runs batted in. He has also drawn 11 walks and has a .494 on-base percentage, to go with four doubles, five triples and two home runs.
A three-year starter, Field has turned in a highly decorated career. In 2010, Field was named a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American. As a sophomore, he was a first team All-Conference selection as an outfielder in addition to being a second team Pac-12 All-Academic honoree.
Along with his selection to the 2013 Golden Spikes Award watch list, Field was named a preseason All-American by Collegiate Baseball (second team) and Baseball America (third team) in January.
Field and the Wildcats resume Pac-12 Conference play this weekend with a three-game set against Washington. The series begins on Friday night at 6 p.m. (MST) at Hi Corbett Field.
