TUCSON, Ariz. – The University of Arizona swimming and diving program will be well-represented at the 2013 FINA World Championships, as several current and former Wildcat swimmers will compete at the event in Barcelona, Spain beginning on Sunday.
Kevin Cordes and Kevin Steel are the current Wildcats on the Team USA swimming roster. Both will participate in breaststroke events. Cordes will swim on the event’s opening day with the prelims of the 100 breast. In addition, the NCAA champion in the 100 and 200 breast, will compete in the 50 breast and 200 breast. Meanwhile, Steel, the 50 breast champion and U.S. Open record holder at the World Trials, will look to make the medal stand in the event.  
Rising sophomore Michael Meyer will represent South Africa in the 200 IM and the 400 IM. Meyer earned a pair of All-American honors as a freshman in both the 400 IM and as a member of the 800 free relay team.
Olympic gold medalist and current U of A volunteer assistant coach Matt Grevers will also swim on day one as he will compete in the 50 fly. Grevers is also set to swim the 100 back and 50 back.
Recent graduate Nimrod Shapira Bar-Or will represent his home country of Israel in the 200 free. Shapira Bar-Or earned five All-American honors this past season with the Wildcats. He was also a member of the national champion 400 medley relay team.
Former Wildcat Roland Schoeman will compete for his home country of South Africa in the 50 fly as well on Sunday. Schoeman will also take part in the 50 free. Arizona alum and Olympian Joel Greenshields will represent Canada in the 100 free
Meanwhile, Olympian Christine Magnuson, who trains at the Hillenbrand Aquatic Center, will compete for Team USA in the 50 fly.
The prelims begin at 1:00 a.m. (PT), and will run between two and three hours (the first day’s prelims will be the longest, at four hours long). Finals will begin at 9 a.m. (PT), and will be roughly two hours long each.
Event finals will be broadcast each day on NBC and Universal Sports. All times listed are EST.
