ONLINE TUTORING AVAILABLE FOR STUDENT-ATHLETES
Our excellent staff in C.A.T.S. Academics has added an innovative option to the support system for each student-athlete that I thought you’d be interested in learning more about. They’ve created an online tutoring program, the first of its kind in the Pac-12 Conference, which provides academic support to our student-athletes while they travel for NCAA contests. Because we can’t dictate the travel schedules or away competitions for student–athletes, we wanted to find a way to provide them with academic support even when they are not in Tucson.
The online tutoring program provides three ways for student-athletes to have access to tutoring while traveling for NCAA related competition. First, tutoring sessions can be recorded and streamed to the student-athlete’s laptop, much like Netflix. Second, tutoring sessions can be recorded and uploaded to the student-athlete’s laptop to be viewed any time with or without internet access. And third, tutoring sessions can be held one-on-one with the student-athlete and tutor through either FaceTime or Skype chat sessions.
The first team to take advantage of the online tutoring program was the women’s volleyball team earlier this fall. We were able to have a variety of online tutoring sessions set up while the team traveled to Hawaii for a week. Men’s and women’s swimming took advantage of the program during their trip to Austin, Texas. All of our programs will able to use these services during Pac-12, conference championship and national championship play, when travel is tedious and can be for several days at a time.
This is another item we have implemented to enhance our student-athlete’s experience here at Arizona. I want to thank our academic services department for generating these new methods. I think we’ll see the benefits of this new program in our ever increasing academic success and I know this will be a great benefit to our student-athletes.
REMEMBERING LEZO
As we continue to remember track and field student-athlete Lezo Urreiztieta, who recently passed away from complications following brain surgery, we wanted to make everyone aware of an opportunity to honor his legacy. In remembrance of their son, Izaro and Melissa Urreiztieta have established the Lezo Urreiztieta Endowed Scholarship which will provide scholarship support to a track and field student-athlete each year. There is also modern #1 T-Shirt from Williams and Associates, which is also available at the bookstore. You can click here to order online or visit the bookstore in person. PAC-12 NETWORKS MOBILE APP
For those of you that have access to the Pac-12 Networks and its programming through your cable system, I wanted to make sure you were aware of and utilizing the mobile app. I use it a lot when I’m on the road and I think it’s fantastic that I can get all that Pac-12 content even when I’m not in the comfort of my home. If you go to the app store on your mobile device, you can search Pac-12 Networks and download the mobile app.
Once you access the app, you’ll notice a key icon on the various programming options. If the icon is green, you’re logged in and ready to enjoy the different live events and programs. If red, you must log-in to watch the videos. To log-in, you’ll need to click on the event you’d like to view and a list of cable providers that support the app will appear. Once you choose your cable provider, you’ll be asked to provide the log-in information. The username and password is the same one you use when logging on to your cable provider’s website to review your services or pay your bill. Currently, the app is supported by 31 cable providers. BASEBALL AND SOFTBALL RESERVED SEASON TICKETS AVAILABLE
The renewal period has come and gone for baseball and softball season tickets. We do have a very limited amount of reserved season tickets for each sport. Reserved season tickets cost a little more than general admission, but you do have the benefit of always knowing you have the same seat for every home game. Of course, whether you choose reserved or general admission season tickets, you’re going to see a much better value with season tickets versus buying tickets on an individual game basis. To purchase baseball and/or softball season tickets, call 520-621-CATS (2287) or click here. The 2014 softball season starts Feb. 7 and the baseball season gets underway on Feb. 14.
COMPLIANCE CORNER
While in Shreveport at the AdvoCare V100 Bowl, some of our student-athletes visited children at University Health, a local hospital. Volunteering for community service is one activity that a majority of our student-athletes find to be an enjoyable and rewarding experience. The student-athletes sometimes reach out on their own to volunteer and other times this is the result of a request from a non-profit or educational program. I wanted to take this opportunity to remind everyone that the proper way to coordinate a community service event with the athletics department is to use ourwebsite. Once there, you will find a link to the community service request form. While we cannot possibly fill every request, we do try to match the events up with student-athletes looking to volunteer in the community. Thanks again to the football players who took time out of their schedule in Shreveport to spend time with the children staying at University Health.
