TUCSON, Ariz. – University of Arizona football has accepted an invitation to play Boise State at the VIZIO Fiesta Bowl in Phoenix, Ariz., it was announced by the College Football Playoff committee and Arizona Athletics on Sunday. The Wildcats’ game with the Broncos will be played Wed., Dec. 31, at 2 p.m. MT and will air on ESPN.
The Boise State Broncos finished the season 11-2 and earned the Mountain West Title. They come into the game ranked 21st in the AP poll.
“This is a great thing for our football program and a wonderful thing for our fans,” Athletics Director Greg Byrne said. “We want to compete for national championships in every sport and this is certainly an indication that we are heading in the right direction and I think it is great for the future of Arizona football. What a great day to be an Arizona Wildcat.”
“I’m really happy for our players, staff and especially our fans,” head coach Rich Rodriguez said. “We have a lot of fans and alumni in Phoenix and hopefully everyone else in Tucson can get up there. It should be nice for the player’s families too because it is a nice time of the year here in Arizona.”
Arizona will participate in its 19th bowl game in program history with the first coming at the 1921 Christmas Classic in San Diego. After a drought from the 1999-2007 seasons, the Wildcats have played in a bowl game in six of the last seven seasons, missing only the 2011 campaign. Last season, Arizona defeated the Boston College Golden Eagles 42-19 in the AdvoCare V100 Bowl.
This is the third time the Wildcats have been invited to the Fiesta Bowl, and it is the first time since 1994 when they defeated the Miami Hurricanes 29-0.
