Tucson, Ariz. - The University of Arizona Wildcat soccer team will have a representative in a pair of friendlies (exhibtions) between the senior national teams of Mexico and the United States. UA alumnus Jazmin Ponce was selected to the women’s team for the matches in Sandy, Utah on Saturday and in Rochester, N.Y. on Sept. 18. Saturday’s match is set for a 6:30 p.m. MST start and will be shown live on ussoccer.com. The match on Sept. 18 in Rochester will be televised by ESPN2 at 4 p.m. MST.
Ponce, a 2014 spring graduate from Arizona, earned All-Pac-12 accolades in the 2012 and 2013 seasons for the Wildcats. In 2013, under current head coach Tony Amato, Ponce flourished, scoring 10 goals and assisting on five others, both career-high totals. Ponce started 77 matches in her career at Arizona, the third-best total in UA history. She has been called up by the Mexican National Team before, she traveled to China with the team in February of 2014 for the Yongchuan Cup. With the 2015 World Cup qualifying matches around the corner, being selected for the friendlies leading up to it is certainly a good sign for Ponce.
