Skowron Named Pac-12 Special Teams Player of the Week

SAN FRANCISCO--- Redshirt senior kicker Casey Skowron has been named the Pac-12’s Special Teams Player of the Week this week after converting on three field goals and accounting for 13 of Arizona’s total 37 points in the Cats’ 37-30 victory over No. 10 Utah on Saturday. The conference made the announcement on Monday.

The Phoenix, Ariz. was nothing short of perfect on Saturday, as he booted through all three field goal attempts (3-for-3 field goals, 4-for-4 PAT), including a critical 35-yarder in overtime to keep Arizona alive in the contest and force the second overtime. The other two were from 47 and 40 yards respectively, while the 47-yarder was just two yards shy of his career-long and one yard short of his season long of 48 yards.

In addition, the senior booted five of his six kickoffs into the endzone for touchbacks, while making a special teams tackle. His kicking helped limit Utah to an average starting field position of its own 22-yardline. The performance also earned him Arizona Special Team Player of the Week for the third time this season, as awarded by the UA coaching staff (Northern Arizona, USC).

For the season, Skowron leads the Wildcats with 91 points scored, following up on a 123-point campaign a year ago that was the most-ever for a UA kicker. The former walk-on has now racked up 214 career points, which ranks No. 7 in program history. He currently stands at No. 5 among the school’s all-time place-kickers, behind Max Zendejas (360, 1982-85), Steve McLaughlin (283, 1991-94), Gary Coston (262, 1986-90), and Lee Pistor (246, 1974-77).

This season, Skowron is 14-for-17 on field goals, improving his career total to 34-for-45 (75.6 percent).

For Skowron, the honor marks the second time he’s won the award in his career after helping the Wildcats to dramatic 27-26 victory over Washington last year, after accounting for 15 total points including a game-winning 47-yard field goal and an 18-yard touchdown rush.

Skowron was named to the AFCA Good Works Team, the Wuerffel Trophy watch list, Lou Groza Award watch list, and was named a semifinalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy this year.

Arizona will close out the regular season on Saturday, as the Cats will travel up to Tempe to take on in-state rival Arizona State at 1:30 pm MST. The game will be broadcast on Fox Sports 1 and can also be heard on the Arizona IMG Radio Network.
