Causing a Racket With Briar Preston

Causing a Racket With Briar Preston

by Amanda Eisen

Q: What made you come to Arizona?

A: “A big reason why I decided to come to Arizona was because of coach Vicky Maes. We got along from the start and the tennis program is really great here. I knew I wanted to end on a high note, and playing in the Pac-12 was the way to go. The weather was also a big plus. Coming from Kentucky where I got a lot of snow and humidity, I love it here because I love the sun.”

Q: How has your experience been thus far playing for Arizona?

A: “It has been amazing. The girls are great and I believe we are a really good unit. It has made my life and everything else really enjoyable.”

Q: How was the transition coming to a new team and coach?

A: “It was probably one of the hardest things. Being at Morehead State for two and a half years, I really got into a routine. It was difficult to leave my coach and team that I had grown with, but it is also such an exciting experience.”

Q: How did the fall season go for you?

A: “Unfortunately I suffered from a few injuries which did keep me out. It was such bad timing with the tournaments, but we practiced really hard. Even though I didn’t get as much match play as I had hoped, I really gained a lot of confidence during practices.”

Q: What do you hope to improve on from last season?

A: “There’s always something, but I really want to work on being a really good competitor the whole season.”

Q: What are some of your goals for this season?

A: “Ideally I would love to have a winning record and go out on a high knowing that I did everything I could possibly do.”

Q: What has been your most memorable moment with your teammates?

A: “We were on a team retreat at a resort here in Tucson. We went on a hike early that morning and as we were finishing, our assistant coach was walking towards us telling us not to panic. It turns out he was trying to warn us that there was a huge rattle snake coiled up in the middle of the trail. This thing was huge and was so loud. Not going to lie we were all panicking a little bit.”

Q: What is a fun fact about you?

A: “I can actually write with my right hand even though I am left handed. It definitely comes in handy when I am in a lecture with a lot of writing. After an injury at my old school, I tore a tendon through my elbow so I actually learned how to play with my right hand for the entire season.”

Q: What do you enjoy most about the Arizona campus?

A: “I love how active it is and there is always something going on. Sometimes when I go on a run around the mall I will see people playing Quidditch or tight rope walking, and I just think it’s so cool.
