IOWA CITY, Iowa – Day two of the men’s swimming and diving NCAA Championships have ended at the Campus Recreational and Wellness Center in Iowa City. No. 13 Arizona is placed 12th overall with a total of 91.5. Texas remains in first (399) while California (275) and Michigan (210) are in second and third, respectively. Senior Kevin Cordes earned his fourth-straight NCAA title in the 100 breast.
In the 200 medley relay, the team of Thane Maudslien, Cordes, Brian Stevens and Brad Tandy took fifth in the B final with 1:25.37, improving from sixth in the prelims. Michael Meyer finished third in the B final of the 400 IM with a time of 3:42.83 after taking fifth in the prelims.
Cordes took first in the 100 breast earning an NCAA title in 50.25. He improved from a second place finish in the prelims (50.93). It was the second-fastest swim in history, only behind his own American record set last year. Cordes has won the title in the 100 breast in all four years of his Arizona career.
When asked about winning the event for the fourth time, Cordes responded “I went out and raced. I did what I had to do tonight. I knew it was going to be difficult, and that I was going to have to give it my best and compete. Luckily I was able to do that and swim my own race.”
“I take a different approach to the season; I am not tapering for midseason. That was a bit different,” Cordes said of his progression during this season. “Coming into this meet, I had to get my feeling back and get back on that form. I was able to do that tonight just by progression in the meet. I am happy with the result tonight and just moving forward to tomorrow. You always want to go faster, but it feels good to get the win too.”
Meanwhile for diving, Rafael Quintero finished 18th in the prelims of the 3-meter with a score of 370.70. Dominic Ricotta took 35th with 341.15.
