TUCSON, Ariz.--- The eighth-seeded Arizona Wildcats will take on the fifth-seeded Oregon Ducks, Wednesday at noon in the opening round of Pac-12 Championship play out at Libbey Park in Ojai, California.
Arizona (8-18, 0-7 Pac-12) enters the event as one of the underdogs in this year’s tournament, but it does come in with some positive momentum, as the Cats nearly upended Utah last time out, dropping a tough 4-2 decision in Salt Lake City last Saturday.
The Wildcats have been led by No. 63 Naoki Takeda, who owns a team-best mark of 23-5, while he’s gone 15-2 during the spring. The junior owns a 13-2 record from the No. 1 spot while he’s posted a 3-1 record against ranked opponents this season.
Freshman Shoki Kasahara has also made a splash in his first season at Arizona, as he ranks second on the squad in overall wins. He’s gone 17-17 for the year and 10-11 in the spring, including earning a convincing straight-set victory last time out at Utah.
The Wildcats dropped a 4-1 decision to Oregon a few weeks ago in Tucson, with Jason Jaruvang claiming UA’s lone victory in the match, defeating Daniel Sardu 6-2, 7-5 from the No. 2 spot. Arizona was also without its top two players in Takeda and senior Sumeet Shinde.
The Cats aim to notch their first-ever Pac-12 Tournament victory in the event’s current format.
