Derek Langley
Derek Langley earned his Bachelor of Arts in Secondary Education Mathematics with a minor in Industrial Technology from Western Michigan University before heading to Vail to teach high school math at Empire High School. He is currently pursuing his Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership from Northern Arizona University.
Mr. Langley teaches geometry, honors geometry, honors algebra 2, geometry re-teach, and algebra 2 re-teach at Empire High School in Vail. He understands that students will optimize learning when they have a connection with their instructor. So, he works to learn as much as he can about the students in his classes to connect with each one of them personally. Sharing stories and teaching about why he is so passionate about his job enhances these connections. He further works to help students make the connections between math and real life situations each day.
When Mr. Langley is not in his classroom, he can be found serving on the district technology team, the district curriculum management team, as a site council member, as a member of the school Health advisory council, and as a credit recovery teacher at Empire. While those activities keep him plenty busy, Mr. Langley makes time for involvement in the extracurricular life at Empire as wel. He volunteers at Track and Field meets, serves as a DREAM Club (Dedication, Responsibility, Education, Attitude, Motivation) sponsor, serves as a math tutor, and is a Co-Supervisor for ROAR (Recognizing Our Achieving Ravens). Mr. Langley further serves with Ben’s Bells of Tucson, runs 5K charity runs, and works with the Meet Me at Maynards program.
