Kimberly Loyd
Kimberly Loyd graduated with a bachelor’s degree in fashion design from Columbia College in Columbia, Missouri, and then earned her master’s degree in secondary education from the University of Central Missouri. She has taught a variety of content areas during her career as a middle school teacher, high school teacher, and adjunct professor, but since 2009, she has immersed herself in her true passion of teaching fashion design at Flowing Wells High School.
Ms. Loyd sees fashion design as the vehicle to advance her belief in the necessity of relevant, hands-on learning. Her students begin designing and constructing their own garments in their first year in the program, and before long, they are developing entire portfolios of designs, patterns, and garments. Ms. Loyd engages her students in the coordination and production of Fusion, a full-fledged runway fashion show that highlights student work, complete with models, music, hair, and make up. Another example of her commitment to relevant learning is the campus clothing store known as Threadz, which provides the perfect platform for Ms. Loyd’s students to apply their merchandising and management skills. Additionally, Ms. Loyd constantly seeks opportunities for her students to participate in competitions and fashion shows around the region, the state, and the entire country (and, it should be noted, Flowing Wells Fashion Design students consistently bring home multiple medals from these competitions).
Kim Loyd’s commitment transcends the boundaries of the school day and the Flowing Wells High School campus. She serves as the Career and Technical Education department chair at FWHS, she mentors new teachers, she serves on the board of directors for the Arizona chapter of Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA), and she is on the National FCCLA Advisors Academy. Ms. Loyd has engaged her students in community service, as well, harnessing the Flowing Wells Fashion Club’s energy for fund raising and volunteerism to support numerous nonprofit organizations.
Kim Loyd’s absolute dedication to her students and to the community is immediately evident and motivates her to be the legendary teacher she is. The Flowing Wells School District is proud to recognize Kim Loyd as our outstanding high school faculty member of the year.
