List of Semifinalists | Fan Voting | Kingery Highlights
TUCSON, Ariz. – University of Arizona second baseman Scott Kingery has been named a semifinalist for 2015 USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award, it was announced Friday. Kingery had previously been listed on a 30-player watch list released earlier in the month.
Twenty-one athletes from around the country were named semifinalists for the 38th Golden Spikes Award, sponsored by Major League Baseball and presented in partnership with the Rod Dedeaux Foundation to the top amateur baseball player in the U.S.
Kingery, a junior, is one of three Pac-12 players on the list. He leads the conference in batting average (.396), runs scored (52), base hits (89) and total bases (129), while ranking second in slugging percentage (.573) and fifth in on-base percentage (.427).
A native of Phoenix, Ariz., Kingery is a candidate for numerous postseason honors. He was named to the Pac-12 All-Conference team last season as a sophomore, and was recognized as a preseason All-American by several publications entering his junior campaign.
USA Baseball officials will announce the list of finalists for the 2015 Golden Spikes Award on Tuesday, June 2. To select the finalists, the list of semifinalists is sent to a voting body consisting of past Golden Spikes Award winners, past USA Baseball National Team coaches and press officers, members of media that closely follow the amateur game, select professional baseball personnel, and current USA Baseball staff, representing a group of more than 200 voters in total.
Fan voting will once again be a part of the Golden Spikes Award in 2015. This announcement officially marks the opening of voting for amateur baseball fans from across the country on GoldenSpikesAward.com. As part of this selection process, all voters will be asked to choose three players from the list of names. Voting will be open until Friday, May 29.
The 2015 Golden Spikes Award winner will be named on Tuesday, June 23, at a presentation in Los Angeles. The finalists and their families will be honored at the Rod Dedeaux Foundation Dinner that evening at the Jonathan Club in downtown Los Angeles.
Previously, Arizona has had three finalists for the award, including the 1980 Golden Spikes Award winner, Terry Francona. Other finalists included Alan Zinter in 1989 and Trevor Crowe in 2005.
Kingery and the Wildcats are wrapping up their regular season this weekend at Hi Corbett Field. Arizona hosts Abilene Christian this evening at 6 p.m.
