Albert Subirats HOF
A 21-time All-American, Albert Subirats cemented himself as one of the best to ever swim at Arizona. A three-time individual National Champion and teammate for five national championship-winning relay teams, he also proved to be at the top internationally, representing his home country of Venezuela in four Olympic appearances. In addition to the records he set at Arizona in the 100 Free, 100 Fly and 100 Back, Albert was a part of the school-record 400 Free Relay in 2007 with a time of 2:47.86. In 2007, he became the second man in NCAA history to win two events in one night, capturing both the 100 fly and 100 backstroke individual national title at the NCAA Championships. Albert’s success that night helped the team finish third overall in 2007.As the team captain of the 2008 National Championship team, Albert won an additional individual national title in the 100 Fly, helping Arizona secure the win the NCAA Team Championship title and bring the most prized trophy home to Tucson. His impressive career as a Wildcat earned him the Arizona Athletics’ Sapphire Award, given yearly to the outstanding senior male student-athlete. But if you ask Albert what was the best part of his college swimming experience – he will tell you the team. “For four years you know how much they've tried, and you don't even want to do it for yourself but for them”, Albert said about the national attention the coaches and team have been given. “There's nothing better. For once, after them giving us everything for four years, we get to give them something.”
