AMY DE LA O – MICA MOUNTAIN HIGH SCHOOL
Amy De La O earned her Bachelor’s of Arts in Hotel, Restaurant, and Tourism Management at New Mexico State University and went into the industry. After moving into management, she found herself leaning toward training and coaching staff. So, she decided to get a Master’s in Secondary Education from Western New Mexico State University to learn what made people tick. Fast forward a decade or so, and Amy shifted gears and teach employability skills to the next generation in business classes in public schools.
When Mica Mountain High School in Vail opened with a Culinary Arts CTE program, Amy found her niche where she could combine her two loves. She now teaches Culinary 1, 2, and 3. Amy’s classes are real world application on almost a daily basis. Students are treated as working professionals and are accountable for the care of their teammates and all equipment and supplies just as they would be in the industry.
Amy is the FCCLA Advisor which involves massive fundraising and community partnerships where her students not only practice their soft skills, but also find the opportunity to serve in hundreds of events on campus, in the district, and beyond!
