Lt. Cmdr. George Murga served as an air crewman during Desert Storm. Upon his return, enrolled in the enlisted commissioning program to earn his Bachelor of Arts in Secondary Education Earth Science from the University of Texas El Paso. He then earned a Master of Arts in Education Leadership from the University of San Diego the same way. He also earned his Associate’s in Maritime Operations from the United States Navy War College.

After 24 years of service, Lt. Cmdr. Murga was asked to launch NJROTC at a brand-new unit at Cienega High School in Vail where he has lead for ten years. Murga works to keep his unit innovative. His cadets researched, studied, and built waterproof underwater robots that could be remotely controlled through their circuit boards. And, he is beginning instruction of drone flying. His students will earn their FFA Certifications in the process.

A recent article written about Murga’s program stated, “Today, you almost can’t go to a public event in without seeing our high school students presenting the colors. They even shine on a state-wide stage and are asked each year to present the colors at the opening session of the Arizona Legislature.” His students really are everywhere with the mission of service before self.
