Iona Uiagalelei begins his first season as an FBS assistant coach, taking over defensive line duties for the Wildcats following an incredibly successful run as defensive coordinator at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, Calif.

While at Mt. SAC, Uiagalalei helped the Mounties win three community college state championships and a pair of national championships. He began as an assistant coach in 2001, before his promotion to defensive coordinator in 2006. Later, Uiagalelei was named an associate head coach and full-time professor in 2010.

Uiagalelei brings an extensive background in developing defensive linemen, including coaching Bruce Irvin at Mt. SAC. Irvin went on to star at West Virginia and later was a first round NFL Draft pick. Uiagalelei is also highly regarding for his connections and relationships with junior college programs as well as the Polynesian community.

In addition to Irvin, Uiagalelei coached Bojay Filimoeatu (Utah State, Oakland Raiders), Nu’u Tafisi (second team All-American, Cal Berkeley, Seahawks, 49’ers), Rulon Davis (Cal Berkeley) and Bernard Afutiti (All-American, BYU).

Uiagalelei prepped at Ganesha High School where he was an All-Inland Valley and All C.I.F. Player.  He then attended Mt. SAC (1995-96) where he received All-Mission Conference honors as a defensive lineman. Later, he transferred to Southern Utah University and was selected to the DIAA All-American Team.

He received his bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Southern Utah University and his master’s degree in physical education at New Mexico Highlands. His coaching career began as a graduate assistant at his alma mater, Southern Utah.

Uiagalelei and his wife Nerisa  have five children, daughters Merosa and Anetero and sons Iona, Tavesi and Leevai.
