In his three seasons by the side of Shields, the program has reached new heights as the Wildcats competed in the NCAA Tournament in 2019 for the first time since 2010.

During the shortened 2019-20 season, Sykut helped coach Jonas Ziverts and Filip Malbasic to national rankings, as Ziverts finished the season ranked No. 55 in the country and Malbasic was ranked No. 63. As a team, Arizona finished the season No. 38 in the country and reached No. 23 at one point.

In the 2018-19 season, the Wildcats were consistently ranked in the top 40 and also won the Blue/Grey Championship, which included wins over Auburn, Texas Tech and Ole Miss in a matter of days. Shields also guided Arizona to their first win over a Pac-12 school since 2014 when they swept Washington 4-0 back in early April.

He helped coach Jonas Ziverts to an All-Pac-12 selection and helped him win the ITA Southwest Rookie of the Year while becoming the first Wildcat to compete at the NCAA Singles Championships since 2006. Filip Malbasic was also named Honorable Mention All-Pac-12 and both finished the season ranked in the ITA polls. As a team, the Wildcats won the ITA Southwest Community Service Award.

In his first season as assistant coach, the program finished ranked as the No. 58 team in the country, their highest ranking at the end of a season since the 2010 season and was characterized as “one of the most improved teams in the country.”

Sykut arrived from his previous appointment at North Carolina State, where he served as the assistant coach from 2016-2017. Before serving as the director of junior tennis at North Ridge Country Club in 2014, Sykut got his coaching career started as the volunteer assistant with the N.C. State program from 2012-2014.

Sykut has boasted success at every level in tennis. On the ATP world circuit, Sykut has a career high singles ranking of 578 and career high doubles ranking of 145. During his career, he won 13 ITF pro circuit doubles titles and a pair of ATP Challenger doubles titles.
