In 2018, Maddocks was named the interim head tennis coach for the Appalachian State men's program. Maddocks began coaching following a successful four-year career with the Mountaineers. He posted a 49-33 mark in singles play and a 42-25 record in doubles action, while helping lead Appalachian State to two semi-finals in the Sun-Belt and Southern Conference tournaments.

All four seasons, Maddocks garnered postseason conference honors including a pair of All-Sun Belt Doubles awards, an All-Sun Belt Singles Team honor and was named to the Southern Conference All-Freshman Team in 2014. Appalachian posted a 46-41 record that was highlighted by a 26-16 showing in back-to-back winning seasons in 2016 and 2017.

Maddocks is a two-time graduate of Appalachian State University. He graduated cum laude in 2017 with a Bachelor's degree in Psychology with a concentration in Health Studies and also in 2020 with a Master's degree in Higher Education Administration with a focus in Leadership and Educational Studies.
