Sergio Romero

Sergio Romero joined the Arizona Women’s Tennis coaching staff in September 2024, bringing a strong track record of player development, recruiting, and competitive success at the collegiate level. Hired by Head Coach Ryan Stotland, Romero quickly made an impact as the Wildcats achieved one of their most successful seasons in over a decade.

In his first year with the program, Romero helped lead Arizona to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances and the team’s highest national ranking since 2012 at No. 26. The Wildcats posted a 14-2 home record, defeated rival Arizona State for the first time since 2014, and finished fifth in the final Big 12 standings. Romero played a pivotal role in developing Josie Usereau, who earned a career-high ITA ranking of No. 34 and was named to the All-Big 12 First Team. He also coached Midori Castillo and Danielle Tuhten to All-Big 12 Second Team honors, and supported Tanvi Narendran’s recognition as Big 12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Before arriving in Tucson, Romero spent over two years at UC Riverside, where he served as Assistant Coach before being promoted to Associate Head Coach for both the men’s and women’s programs. His responsibilities included recruiting, team practices, individual development sessions, and administrative operations. During his tenure, Romero helped elevate the performance of several student-athletes, including Antreas Djakouris (UTR 12.5), a Big West Player of the Week and 2023 All-Big West honoree. He also guided two walk-on players to significant UTR improvements, developing them from 9 UTR to 11+ in just one season.

Romero began his coaching career at Hope International University in Fullerton, California, where he served as an assistant for the men’s and women’s teams from 2019 to 2022. His contributions helped the women’s program achieve its first-ever national ranking and a historic appearance in the NAIA National Championships for doubles. Romero was instrumental in the development of two-time All-American Simon Campos Perez (UTR 12).

In addition to his collegiate coaching experience, Romero worked as a Tennis Professional at Fullerton Tennis Center, providing private and group instruction to athletes across a range of skill levels.
