Dr. Sofia Read serves as the Tyler Family Endowed Assistant Athletics Director for the Edward T. Bell C.A.T.S. Student-Athlete Development program at the University of Arizona, a position she assumed in May 2024 as the department’s first-ever endowed role. She began overseeing theĀ program following the 2020 retirement of trailblazing icon Becky Bell.

As part of Arizona Athletics’ Commitment to an Athlete’s Total Success (C.A.T.S.), Dr. Read continues to advance the pioneering legacy of student-athlete development established more than three decades ago. Under her leadership, the program delivers innovative, evidence-based initiatives that enrich all aspects of the student-athlete experience, supporting personal growth, leadership, academic success, and career readiness. Through tailored programs, events, and one-on-one guidance, C.A.T.S. Student-Athlete Development empowers student-athletes to develop as leaders, engaged citizens, and future professionals.

Since joining the C.A.T.S. Student-Athlete Development team in July 2018, Dr. Read has strengthened Arizona Athletics’ long-standing tradition of holistic support through initiatives in personal and leadership development, community engagement, and career exploration. Her vision ensures that Arizona student-athletes continue to thrive as champions in competition, in the classroom, and in their communities.

Dr. Read earned her bachelor of science in sport management from Towson University, where she was a two-year co-captain of the women’s soccer team. She later completed a master of science in sport management at the University of Connecticut, where she contributed to the Student-Athlete Success Program and youth development initiatives addressing sport and social issues. In May 2023, she earned her doctorate in educational leadership from the University of Arizona, focusing her dissertation on the experiences of student-athlete development professionals in higher education and their journeys toward critical awareness and action.
