At each and every university across the county, the student-athletes are the heart and soul of the athletic department. While many see their accomplishments on the field, it is their achievements outside of athletic competition that should also be recognized. So many student-athletes make it a point to become immersed in their campus and local communities while also competing at the highest level.
Â
So we would like to take this time to recognize the 62 University of Arizona student-athletes who have maintained a 3.0 grade-point average or better while also completing at least five hours of community service over the past year – a task made even more challenging due to the COVID-19 pandemic. But just as they do on the court or on the field, they persevered and found a way.
What is National STUDENT-Athlete Day?
?National STUDENT-Athlete Day, was created 1987 by the National Consortium for Academics and Sports (NCAS), officially renamed the Institute for Sport & Social Justice (ISSJ). Celebrated annually on April 6th, National STUDENT-Athlete Day honors high school and college student-athletes who have achieved excellence in academics and athletics, while having made significant contribution to their schools and communities. National STUDENT-Athlete Day is one of America's strongest endeavors promoting the positive virtues of sport, student-athletes as a whole, and the positive affect they both have on society.
Since its inception, over 4.4 million student-athletes were honored with National STUDENT-Athlete Day award certificates. We are now providing, at no cost, silicone wristbands. They are black with silver writing that reads National STUDENT-Athlete Day. All student-athletes must have earned a 3.0+ GPA and be involved in outreach and community service. (
