TUCSON--Senior All-American Jennie Finch added to her list of
accomplishments by winning her 51st consecutive game to help Arizona beat
Cal State Northridge, 6-0, in Arizona's Worth Wildcat Invitational softball
tournament.
Finch last lost a game April 21, 2000, a 3-1 decision at No. 4-ranked
Arizona State. She eclipsed the mark of 50 victories set by Rebecca Aase of
Florida State from 1991 to 1993. Finch struck out 10 and scattered three
hits for her seventh shutout of the season.
Finch finished 2000 with eight straight victories for a 19-2 record, was
32-0 last year and has won her first 11 decisions this season.
The Wildcats jumped on the board in the first with a one-out single by
Carrie Hagen, who stole second, was moved to third by Finch's infield
single, then scored on Leneah Manuma's hit down the left field line.
UA scored three more in the third. Finch hit a solo homer to lead off.
Later, Lisha Ribellia scored on a delayed steal, crossing the plate while
Jackie Coburn got herself caught between first and second, and beat the
throw back to first. Allyson Von Lichtenstein singled in the final run,
scoring Coburn from second.
Second baseman Ribellia and shortstop Lovie Jung turned a double play in
the fourth to thwart a potential CSN rally after Christen Bedwell walked
and pitcher Summer Richardson singled.
Finch walked and scored from first in the fourth to make it 5-0 when CSN
rightfielder Sondar Milchiker let Manuma's single bounce off her glove.
Coburn hit a solo homer to center in the fifth to push the lead to 6-0.
