TUCSON - Arizona banged out 13 hits and Alicia Hollowell scattered five as
top-ranked Arizona whipped Arkansas, 9-1 in the Cats' Pepsi Arizona
Softball Classic tournament Sunday.
UA improved to 13-1 on the year and Arkansas dropped to 5-8. The Wildcats
were 3-0 in the rain-shortened tourney while Arkansas dropped its three games.
Autumn Champion's infield single drove in Jackie Coburn with the first run
in the UA second. Coburn led off with a single, moved to second on an
infield single by Alysson Von Liechtenstein and to third on a sacrifice
bunt by Crystal Farley.
Arkansas tied the game in the top of the third. Pitcher Blaire Woodward
and Stephanie Hunter singled, then on a double steal UA third baseman
Coburn mishandled the throw and allowed Woodward to score.
Arizona aswered quickly with a single by Wendy Allen, an RBI double in the
gap in left by Mackenzie Vandergeest and an RBI single by Coburn to make it
3-1, chasing Woodward. An out later, Von Lichtenstein walked and Farley
doubled down the right field line to make it 4-1.
An inning later a single by Courtney Fossatti, a walk to Lovie Jung and a
single by Allen loaded the bases for Coburn, who doubled in two runs to
boost the lead to five runs. Lisha Ribellia drove in Allen with a sacrifice
fly and it was 7-1.
Farley and Autumn Champion singled and Von Liechtenstein walked to lead
off the UA fifth. Jung drew a walk to drive in the eighth run and Allen
grounded out to second to drive in the ninth run, ending the game on the
eight-run mercy rule.
