PULLMAN, Wash.- The Washington State baseball team avoided a three-game series sweep by Arizona with a 12-8 win over the No. 24-ranked Wildcats at Bailey-Brayton Field on Saturday. The loss dropped the Wildcats to 28-14 overall and 7-5 in the Pac-10.

Washington State exploded for seven runs in the third and fourth innings off of starter Kevin Guyette and reliever Chris Goodman to break a 2-2 tie and take a commanding 9-2 lead.

The Wildcats hit three home runs in the seventh inning to pull within four runs at 12-8, but could not draw any closer as WSU reliever Nick Kenyon came on to shut down the Arizona offense over the final three innings.

Led by a 5 for 5, two-run day by Jonathan Fender, eight of the nine Washington State starters on offense collected at least one hit in the game as the Cougars matched their season-high for hits in a game with 18.

Junior Dallas Haught, Arizona's 11th inning hero from Friday, hit his fourth home run of the season in UA's five-run eighth. Freshmen Brad Boyer and Nick Hundley chipped in with a solo home run and a two-run shot, respectively in the loss.

Guyette (2-3), who gave up six runs on 10 hits, picked up his third loss of the season. WSU's Aaron MacKenzie tallied his third of the year with six innings of work on the mound for the Cougars.

Arizona will travel to Phoenix on Tuesday for a non-conference game against Grand Canyon before heading to Palo Alto for a three-game tilt with Pac-10 leader Stanford. Game time for the game with Grand Canyon is set for 7 p.m. and will be broadcast live on KNST (790-AM).
