TUCSON, Ariz.- The 15th-ranked Arizona baseball team rapped out eight extra base hits, including a pair of home runs, and overcame a late rally to hold on for a 10-6 win over No. 8 Cal State Fullerton on Kindall Field at Sancet Stadium on Saturday. The win improved Arizona to 5-0 for the season and secured a second straight series win over a Big West Conference team. Fullerton, which equaled its 2003 total for series loses at two with the defeat, fell to 3-5 overall on the year.
Trailing 1-0 after an inning of play, the Wildcats plated three runs apiece in the second and third innings and added two more in the fourth to jump out to a 8-1 lead.
Zach Bies opened the scoring for the Wildcats in the second with his first career hit, a two-out, two-run double down the left field line. Senior Moises Duran brought Bies home two batters later with a single to left center to hand Arizona a 3-0 lead.
Freshman DH DJ Lewis added a run-scoring single in the third and a two-run double in the fourth to go along with sophomore Trevor Crowe's third-inning two-run homer to push the UA advantage to seven runs.
After a Pat Reilly solo home run in the bottom of the seventh made the score 9-1, the Titans rallied to plate five runs on four hits in the top of the eighth to cut UA's lead to three. However, it wasn't enough as relievers Scott Burns and Derek Rodriguez quelled the rally and picked up the final six outs for the series clinching win.
Lewis finished the game 2 for 4 with a game-high three RBI in his second career start. Junior Jeff Van Houten tallied three hits, including a double and a triple, in five at bats while also scoring three runs.
Arizona starter Kevin Guyette (1-0) settled in after giving up a solo home run to P.J. Pilittere in the top of the first to record his first win of the year. The sophomore right-hander limited the Titan bats to four runs on six hits in seven innings of work. He struck out four and walked four.
CSF's Ricky Romero (1-2) was charged with his second loss of the season after giving up eight runs on nine hits in four innings on the mound . He finished with just one strikeout against five walks.
The Wildcats will attempt the series sweep on Sunday with right-hander Luis Cortez scheduled to start the 1 pm game.
