TUCSON, Ariz. - The No. 38-ranked Arizona men's tennis team defeated the No. 63 UC Santa Barbara Gauchos, 5-2, Sunday, Feb. 8. Arizona won all three doubles and four of the six singles matches. The win improves Arizona's record to 4-1, while UC Santa Barbara falls to 2-3.
In doubles, junior Colin O'Grady and sophomore Roger Matalonga easily defeated Nick Brotman and Michael Frick in the No. 2 position, 8-1. In the top-spot, the combination of junior Paul Warkentin and sophomore Daniel Andrus beat Alex Anselme and Mike Placek, 8-3. On court three the duo of seniors Whi Kim and Tom Lloyd defeated Nick Edlefsen and Leo Basica, 8-5.
In singles, Arizona won quickly on courts one and five, each match taking approximately one hour to complete. On court one, Kim defeated Brotman, 6-3, 6-1. Andrus made short work of Edlefson, 6-2, 6-2, in the five hole.
Trailing 3-0, UC Santa Barbara earned a point on court six, where Matt Coin defeated Warkentin, 6-1, 6-3.
Arizona then clenched the match 4-1, after No. 84 Lloyd defeated No. 94 Anselme, 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 (5). Matalonga followed Lloyd's lead shortly after by defeating Elad Stern, 6-3, 7-5.
Down 5-1, Mike Placek beat O'Grady in a closely contested match on court four, 5-7, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (6).
Arizona will hit the courts again Thursday, Feb. 12, against Wichita State at the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center. First serve is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
