TUCSON, Ariz.- No late inning heroics were needed as the No. 16 Arizona baseball team completed a three-game sweep of UC Riverside with a 10-7 win on Kindall Field at Sancet Stadium on Sunday. Unlike the previous two games of the series, the Wildcats (3-0) jumped out to a commanding lead early and held on to remain perfect on the season.
Trailing 1-0, Arizona took the lead in the bottom of the second on a two-run homer off the bat of junior Pat Reilly and then added six more runs in the third. Leading off with five straight hits in the third, the Wildcats sent 10 hitters to the plate and chased UCR's starter Daniel Stange in the game-breaking inning
Arizona posted a season-high 18 hits in the contest with all nine starters collecting at least one hit and seven of the nine with two or more. Individually senior Moises Duran led all players with a 3 for 3, two-run day at the plate. Reilly, who finished the three-games series 6 for 9, went 2 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs scored on Sunday and freshman Bill Rhinehart hit his first collegiate home run en route to a four-RBI day. UCR's Tony Festa finished 3 for 5 with a home run and three RBIs in the loss.
Starter Luis Cortez, making his Arizona debut, picked up the win on the mound. The right-hander gave up just three runs on four hits in five innings of work. He struck out four and did not walk a batter. UCR's Stange (0-1) was charged with the loss after giving up seven runs on eight hits in just two innings.
The Wildcats will return to action next weekend against No. 4-ranked Cal State Fullerton (3-3). The Titans, a 2003 College World Series participant, will head to Tucson fresh off a three-game sweep of UNLV. First pitch for the opening game of the three-game series on Friday is set for 3 pm MST.
