Baseball Comes Back From Six Runs Down To Win 10-9 Over UNLV

LAS VEGAS, Nev.- The Arizona baseball team rallied from a 9-3 deficit by scoring seven runs over final four innings to complete a two-game sweep over UNLV at Earl E. Wilson Field on Wednesday. The 10-9 victory improved the Wildcats to 18-15-1 for the season while the Rebels fell to 22-13 with the loss.

Junior Jeff Van Houten capped the come-from-behind win with a RBI single up the middle to score classmate John Hardy from second with two outs in the top of the eighth. Hardy, who finished 2 for 4 with a pair of runs scored on the day, tied the game at 9-9 two batters earlier when his double down the left field line scored freshman Jason Donald all the way from first.

Sophomore Jordan Brown's third home run of the season, a solo shot to right in the sixth, started the late-game rally as the Wildcats scored two in the sixth, two of the seventh and three in the eighth. Brown finished the game with a team-high three hits in five at bats with three RBI and a run scored.

After surrendering an early two-run lead to the Wildcats in a three-run UA third, the Rebels had rallied to tie the game at 3-3 with a run in the home half of the inning before retaking its ill-fated six-run lead with a pair of runs in the fourth and four in the fifth for a 9-3 advantage.

Arizona's Luis Cortez (3-3) picked up his third win of the year with a hitless inning of relief. Las Vegas product Derek Rodriguez worked the final two innings for his team-leading sixth save of the year for Arizona. Rodriguez dodged a bullet in the ninth, standing the game-tying run at third when the final out of the game was recorded

UNLV's Ben Scheinbaum (2-3) was charged with his third loss of the year after giving up five runs on five hits in two innings of work.

Arizona will head back to Tucson for a three-game series against UT Pan American at Kindall Field this Friday-Sunday. The three-game series against the Broncos will close out a seven-day, six-game stretch in the Arizona schedule. First pitch for the series opener on Friday is scheduled for 7 pm.
