SILVER CITY, N.M. - The Arizona men's golf JV team moved up a spot Tuesday at the Cactus Thaw to finish eighth in the event. UA was led by Stefan Cox who finished in a tie for 20th.
Arizona finished with an 898 (+46) on the tournament, 30 strokes behind winner Colorado-Colorado Springs.
Nick Olsgaard, who scored the team's worst rounds in both the first and second round, responded from his 81-76 day one to card a 69 (-2), easily the best round by a Wildcat, and bested only by second-place finisher Jim Knous of Colorado Mines for the tournament. Olsgaard, a freshman competing in his first collegiate tournament, finished tied for 34th.
Cox entered the day in third place, but fell out of contention with his third-round 80 (+9). Each Wildcat golfer finished one stroke apart. Cox finished at ten-over, Peter Ireland finished at 11-over, Tom Conran 12-over and Olsgaard finished 13-over.
Arizona played four golfers in a play-five, count-four format, so did not receive the luxury of discounting the team's low round that every other team had.
The team is in action again next week when it competes in the Isleworth Collegiate in Orlando, Fla., Oct. 23-25.
