PALO ALTO, Calif. - The No. 20 University of Arizona volleyball team was beaten in straight sets Wednesday evening against No. 4 Stanford in Maples Pavilion.  Set scores were: 25-17, 26-24, 25-23.

 

With the loss, the Wildcats drop to 20-10 overall on the season and 9-8 in Pac-10 play.  The Cardinal adds to its record of 23-3, 14-3 in conference.

 

Tiffany Owens recorded her conference-leading 18th double-double on the season with 16 kills and 10 digs for Arizona which battled Stanford closely in sets two and three but couldn't over take the home team.  Set two saw the score tied 11 times and change hands twice.

 

Courtney Karst was the only other UA player who posted double-digit kills with 14 on 33 swings.  Paige Weber collected 39 assists while freshman Candace Nicholson had 12 digs to lead the Cats.

 

UA hit a respectable .284, but could not slow down Stanford who recorded a hitting percentage of .384 led by six different players totaling at least six kills.

 

Next up for Arizona is the regular season finale at No. 2 California on Friday afternoon at noon Pacific Time. The match has been slated for tape delay broadcast by Fox Sports Net.
