TUCSON - The University of Arizona Wildcat men's and women's cross country teams ran at the Grand Canyon Invitational in Goodyear, Ariz. on Saturday. The 14th-ranked Arizona women won the race, with senior Hanna Henson finishing in first place. The men's squad finished in second place overall. Junior Rory McLeod was the top finisher, earning a seventh-place finish.

The women's team finished first overall, with five finishing in the top six and all seven finishers in the top 12. Arizona won with a total of 17 points, Arizona State finished in second with 40 points and New Mexico State was third with 88 points.

Henson won the race with a 5K time of 18:04.7. Freshman Nicci Corbin finished in second, clocking a time of 18:07.7. Freshman Clea Formaz made her debut for the Wildcats, finishing in third place with a time of 18:29.6. Freshman Kate Penney finished in fifth, running the 5K in 18:39.6. Freshman Hanna Peterson clocked a time of 18:42.2, finishing in sixth place. Freshman Daylee Burr ran an 18:48.2 and finished in ninth place. Junior Kat Howard finished 12th, running the race in 19:06.3.

"The course today was a little bit harder, so our women were cruising," head coach James Li said. "They didn't push themselves too hard because of the difficulty of the course."

The men's squad finished two in the top 10 and all five scorers in the top 21. Arizona State was first overall with 28 points. Arizona took second place overall with 66 points and New Mexico State was third with 90 points.

Arizona's top finisher McLeod earned his seventh-place finish in the 8,000-meter race with a time of 25:47.2. Freshman Dylan Souza earned ninth place, clocking a time of 25:52.8. Freshman Thomas Valente earned a 12th-place finish with a time of 25:59.9. Sophomore Noe Ramirez had a time of 26:05.3, good for 17th place. Freshman Sam Macaluso ran the race in 26:23.9, finishing 21st. Sophomore Davis Rajs finished in 65th place, clocking a time of 29:18.0.

"I was quite happy with the men, I think they did better," Li said. "We didn't run our top four guys but the rest of them are making really good progress. Their times are better and they seem to be more competitive. I'm pretty happy about that."

The Wildcats will run next at the Wisconsin adidas Invitational on Fri., Oct. 14, in Madison, Wisc., hosted by the University of Wisconsin.
