Nov. 18, 2011

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -

Seniors Cursty Jackson (Los Angeles, Calif.) and Courtney Karst (Centennial, Colo.) led the Arizona volleyball team (18-10, 10-9) past No. 2 UCLA (23-5, 16-4) to sweep the Bruins for the first time since 2005. The Wildcats won 3-0 (25-23, 25-23, 25-20) in Wooden Center.

On Oct. 8, Arizona defeated then-No. 2 UCLA in Tucson, Ariz., 3-2.

Jackson and Karst led the team in kills with 11, Jackson hitting .304 and Karst .393.

“We really played well tonight,” Arizona head coach David Rubio said. “It may have been our best-played match of the year.”

According to current records, Arizona volleyball had never beaten a top-two team on the road. The last time the Wildcats defeated two top-two teams in one season was in 1993, when Arizona defeated No. 2 Stanford on Oct. 24 and No. 1 UCLA on Nov. 7.

Sophomore Candace Nicholson (Long Beach, Calif.) added 10 digs for the Wildcats, while freshman Rachel Rhoades (San Diego, Calif.) had five blocks.

As a team, Arizona outhit UCLA in every set and held them to a .189 hitting percentage. In addition, the Wildcats out-blocked the Bruins, seven to four.

“Everything fell into place,” Rubio said. “Our serving, blocking, passing--everything. It was a really good effort by everyone and we feel pretty good.”

Rachael Kidder led the Bruins with 15 kills.

Arizona will face an even tougher challenge on Saturday as it faces No. 1 USC at 7 p.m. PT.
