"We came out very tentative in doubles although we managed to grease out the point," head coach Tad Berkowitz said. "I was very pleased with the effort and attitude in singles."
In doubles action, four out of the six Wildcats were freshman along with two seniors. The Cats (3-2, 0-0 Pac-10) and Lumberjacks (2-4, 0-0 Big Sky) battled on all three courts, splitting wins on courts one and two. On court one, the freshman-senior duo of Giacomo Miccini and Geoff Embry claimed their match, with a 9-7 win over Hugo Ramadier and Dominic Bermudez. The Wildcat duo fell to an early deficit but evened the score at six all and again at seven all before securing the next two games.
The `Jacks balanced the doubles score with a win on court three. The freshman tandem of Andre Vidaller and Kieren Thompson built a 5-0 lead over NAU's David Flodberg and Robin Pezzutto before the NAU duo propelled their way back by earning four straight games. The two teams tied at seven all and again at eight all to force a tiebreaker. In the tiebreaker, Vidaller and Thompson suffered a close 7-5 loss.
On court two, the Wildcats secured the doubles point with the freshman-senior duo of Sam Barr and Borja Malo. After falling behind 0-3 to NAU's Patrick Schimmelbauer and Josh Brown, the Wildcat pair roared back, tying the `Jacks four different times before forcing a tiebreaker at eight all. Barr and Malo clinched the doubles point in an 8-6 tiebreaker after battling back and forth to give the Wildcats the advantage heading into singles.
