Post-Round Quotes; Thursday, May 19, 2011
Head Coach J.T. Higgins, Texas A&M
"We did okay today. We had a rough start, but I'm proud that the guys fought back, but we didn't play our best. We struggled on the greens early, but adjusted better on the back nine, and I hope that will help with the next few rounds."
John Hurley, Texas A&M
"I had a pretty up and down start, bogeyed a couple times in the early holes. It took me a while to settle, but when I did I started hitting better. I did well on the greens, put myself in some makeable spots, but the early bogeys did hut me. I finished well, which is very important because I know we've struggled today as a team."
Head Coach Greg Sands, Texas Tech
"We struggled to start, but the guys hung in there. We did well on the easy holes, and even some of the harder holes. We can't win it on day one, but we can certainly lose on day one."
Matt Smith, Texas Tech
"It was a pretty good start. I started off well, hit solidly. Overall, it was a pretty good day."
Head Coach Ryan Donovan, San Diego State
"Overall it was a solid first round. We were patient, and that is our strategy, and I'm proud of our guys. It's nice to be back here. We won the conference here a couple weeks ago, so the guys know what to expect out here.
Colin Featherstone, San Diego State
"It was a good round. I had some good putts, got up and down when I needed, and was just comfortable. It's given me confidence going into the next round. The team is doing well, and hopefully that confidence will keep up for the next two days."
Matt Hansen, UC Davis
"This golf course really fits my eye. I feel very comfortable out there. I don't have to hit a draw, I can hit a fade (his natural shot) on every hole."
Assistant Coach Greg Robertson, Purdue
"From what I saw, it looked like we hit the ball pretty well. It was the putting. We just didn't hit the putts. There's lots of golf left but we're behind the eight ball a bit."
Tyler Duncan, Purdue
"It felt good. I'm glad the tournament started, I've been very excited for this weekend. Starting off on the front nine, things were pretty solid. I stumbled a bit on the back nine, but got in with a decent number."
Head Coach John Geiberger, Pepperdine
"I think we got off to a decent start. We're still right there. I think most of our guys feel like they could have played a little better. It was nice to see our freshman shoot under par today. It's a big tournament for him. We all feel like we have the tools to play well. Everyone's just going to go out and try to shoot under par and we'll see what happens in the end."
Parker Page, Pepperdine
"This is my first regional because I'm a freshman. I was a little nervous to start off, took a few tentative swings, but I gained some confidence which I think was reflected in my scorecard. For tomorrow, there are a few things that need tightening up. I have a positive outlook, and I'm excited for the rest of the week."
Head Coach John Reehoom, Oregon State
"It was a tale of two nines out there. We had a pretty bad front nine and a really good back nine. Alex (Moore) played well out there and continued his great play from the Pac-10 Championships. Nick (Sherwood) and David (Fink) were awesome on the back nine and we're hanging in there. Tomorrow, we just have to play like we did on the back nine. The front nine we just played terrible, to be honest. We're still in it and we have a chance."
Alex Moore, Oregon State
"I feel pretty good. I felt like I played solid golf - calm and patient. The game kind of came to me. We just hope we get off to a better start tomorrow and keep the momentum going from the back nine today."
Will Hogan, Missouri State
"I don't feel like I played well. I hit the ball solid but just had trouble judging distance. I didn't make the putts. Tomorrow, I need to make some birdies and go low the next two rounds. I just need to have confidence in every shot."
Head Coach Rick LaRose, Arizona
"We had a decent start, obviously. Tarquin (MacManus) is a big-time player. He got us off to a fast start today."
"I thought everyone had a good start but we had a little hiccup there in the middle. We need to have everyone under part every day going forward."
"You can't win it today, but you sure can lose it. We don't have to do anything spectacular but we need to get four guys under par. They're all capable of shooting that. Tomorrow is going to be a big day."
Tarquin MacManus, Arizona
"I thought I played pretty well today. We've just got to buckle down and have a couple more strong days going forward."
Jonathan Khan, Arizona
"We need to help out Tarquin these next couple days. He kind of saved us today. I'm kind of disappointed, I was I think three-under through eight and had a couple bad holes there. We left Tarquin out to dry a bit out there and we can't do that."
Head Coach Steve Desimone, California
"You know it's the first round of regionals. We didn't play particularly well but we didn't play particularly bad either. I'm disappointed we're not a little closer to the lead but we still have 36 holes to go. I think we need to putt a little better. We had too many three-putts today. Had a couple more putts dropped, it would be a totally different story. But luckily, we have 36 more holes left."
Gustaf Kocken, Louisiana-Monroe
"I thought today went pretty well. I had a lot of fun out there. To a degree, it was the best I've played so far this year. I want to hit a little more putts, of course. But I played solid and I don't want to change anything."
Jason Shufflebothan, UAB
"I thought I played poorly...sloppy. I made a lot of mental errors and a lot of just general errors. I've got to get a few things straight with the course. Right now, I'm going to relax and eat lunch and just get ready for tomorrow."
Head Coach Brian Watts, Army
"Overall, we got off to a good start. We had a couples guys have some hiccups there in the middle but overall, I'm pleased with the way we performed but it could have been better. It's hard to say we need to go out and play aggressive but we definitely need to hit a few more onto the green tomorrow and knock down some more putts. We aren't used to playing on this fast of a green but they are spectacular greens. But now we're going to change the game plan and we'll have to play a little more aggressively than I'd like but hopefully we can get back into things."
