University of Arizona volleyball improved its record to 5-1 after defeating Eastern Washington (3-4) in its third and final game of the Wildcat Classic on Friday at McKale Center. The Wildcats won 3-0, beating the Eagles 26-24, 25-23, 25-23.

Freshman Madi Kingdon (Phoenix, Ariz.) led Arizona with nine kills and senior Marketa Hanzlova (Liberec, Czech Republic) added 14 digs.

The Wildcats came out strong in set one, scoring the first four points, but the teams traded points and found themselves tied 24-24. Arizona then scored off an Eagle error and senior Courtney Karst (Centennial, Colo.) sealed the set with a kill. Hanzlova led the Wildcats with four kills and senior Cursty Jackson (Los Angeles) recorded four blocks.

In the second set, Arizona and Eastern Washington traded points until the Wildcats went on a 7-1 run to go up 13-8. The Eagles were not able to catch up and Arizona took set two, 25-23. Kingdon and Karst each contributed four kills in the second set, while freshman Chloe Mathis (La Jolla, Calif.) took over at the setter position.

"Chloe has been in and out a little bit and I felt that she was pretty instrumental in being able to turn us around in the middle of game two," said Arizona head coach David Rubio. "It was nice for her to be able to do that."

The third set was more of the same as the teams went point-for-point, but the Wildcats were able to come up with a win after taking set three, 25-23.

Shelby Puckett led the Eagles with nine kills.

"We have one more week before non-conference and then we hop right into conference play," Rubio said. "We don't have a lot of time to tweak things, but we will need to look at a few more things."

Arizona will hit the road to partake in the Evansville Dunn Hospitality Invitational Sept. 9 and 10 in Evansville, Ind. The Wildcats will face Illinois-Chicago at 6:30 p.m. ET on Friday, Southeast Missouri State at 12 p.m. ET on Saturday and Evansville at 5:30 p.m. ET on Saturday.
