TUCSON - The University of Arizona Wildcats No. 9 men's and No. 10 women's track and field teams opened the 2012 indoor season with the Lumberjack Invitational on Jan. 14, held at Northern Arizona's J.L. Walkup Skydome.
"I felt we had a very successful meet," head coach Fred Harvey said. "We are by no stretch of the imagination where we want to be or where we're going to be. We have a lot of really good things happening but we also have a lot of things to work on. We're going to be working on them at a very high performance level. We had a lot of great performances in all of the events, and starting off in that fashion is great but we know there is still a lot left in the tank."
Junior Brigetta Barrett, the 2011 NCAA Indoor Champion, gave Arizona their first win of the day. Barrett won the high jump competition, clearing 6-2 (1.88m) and automatically qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships. Freshman Shakayla McEaddy also competed in the event and finished in fourth place with a mark of 5-1.75 (1.57m). Juniors Nick Ross and Edgar Rivera-Morales jumped 7-3 (2.21m), tying for first place and giving UA their second win of the day.
"Nick Ross and Edgar Rivera-Morales both going 7-3, you have to be excited about that," head coach Fred Harvey said. "Brigetta Barrett jumping 6-2 is a really nice opener for her."
Sophomore Tamara Pridgett ran 7.51 in the 60-meter dash, earning a third-place finish and setting a personal record. Senior Dahlys Marshall ran the 60-meter hurdles in 8.40, finishing in second. Junior Ariel Coleman ran the 60-meter hurdles in 8.71, good for sixth place. Sophomore Shapri Romero finished in third in the 200 meters, clocking a time of 24.81.
In the 4x400-meter relay, the women's "A" squad won the last track event of the day with a time of 3:43.96. The quartet included Romero, Pridgett, Coleman and senior Echos Blevins.
Juniors Taylor Freeman and Omotayo Talabi had solid performances in the shot put. Talabi set a personal record with a mark of 49-1.5 (14.97m), earning fourth place. Freeman finished in fifth with a throw of 48-7.25 (14.81m). Senior Taylor Bush threw 58-3 (17.77m) setting a personal record and good for a fourth-place finish in the weight throw.
Junior Chris McSwain finished ran 6.78 in the 60-meter dash, earning a fifth-place finish. Sophomore Sean Delfani finished in 12th in the 400 meters, clocking a time of 50.18. In the men's 60-meter hurdles, freshman Lezo Urreiztieta finished in fifth, posting a time of 8.37. Senior Chris McGovern had a time of 8.38, good for a sixth-place finish. Ross had a time of 8.48 and finished in seventh.
"There is a lot to be excited about and there's a lot of promise but we know that if we're going to win titles, there is a lot more work that has to go into it."
UA will return to the track on Jan. 27 at the Razorback Invitational. The event is hosted by the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, Ark.
