The Arizona Wildcat men's tennis team sent four players to compete in the 2012 USTA/ITA Southwest Regional Championships in Irvine, Calif. Giacomo Miccini, Kieren Thompson, Andre Vidaller and Sumeet Shinde are representing the Wildcats at UC Irvine's Recreation Center and Anteater Tennis Stadium.
The day began with doubles play where Miccini and Vidaller teamed up to take on Naveen Beasley and Derek Klein from Cal Poly. The Arizona duo held the Cal Poly team to three wins to claim the match, 8-3. In round of 16 play, Miccini and Vidaller played the No. 1 seeded team of Max De Vroome and Roberto Quiroz from USC. Miccini and Vidaller fell, 8-2.
In round of 32 action, Shinde and Thompson knocked Hawaii's No. 4 seeded Jon Brooklyn and Dymitri Kovalyav out of play with a, 8-4, win. In the round of 16, Shinde and Thompson took on Marco Comuzzo and Jurgen DeJager from Cal Poly. The Arizona duo clinched the match, 8-4, to advance to the doubles quarterfinals. On Sunday, they will play No. 7 Nicholas Bjerke and Sebastian Bustamante from LMU.
In singles action, Vidaller took on No. 14 seeded Roman Kalaydijan from San Diego in the round of 32. The junior from Santos, Brazil claimed the first set, 6-3, but was topped in the second and third sets, 7-5, 6-4.
Shinde faced off against Cal Poly's Beasley in the round of 32. The Arizona sophomore dropped the first set, 6-3, but rebounded to clinch the next two sets, 7-5, 6-2. The win advanced him to the round of 16 where he will play No. 3 Roberto Quiroz from USC on Sunday.
