The Arizona Wildcat men's tennis team sent four players to San Diego, Calif. to participate in the 2012 Aztec Invite hosted by San Diego State University. Kieren Thompson, Mario Urquidi, Carlos Bermudez and Matt Dunn are representing the Wildcats at Aztec Tennis Center.
The day began with singles play, which broke players into Flight A, and Flight B brackets and included consolation brackets for both Flight A and Flight B.
In Flight A round-of-16 play, Urquidi took on Sean Kolar from Sacramento State. Urquidi dropped the first set, 6-3, but came back to claim the second set, 6-4. With the match tied at one set apiece Urquidi and Kolar fought a close third set, but Urquidi was ultimately edged, 6-4. With the loss, Urquidi falls to the Flight A consolation bracket which matches him up with UC San Diego's Andrew Malozasak, the match will be played on Saturday.
Also in Flight A round-of-16 play, Thompson played USD's JP Boyd. Thompson dropped the first set, 6-4, but answered by claiming the second set, 6-4. In the third set, Boyd came back to Thompson, 6-4 to clinch the match. Tomorrow, Thompson will compete in the Flight A consolation draw where he is set to play Freddy Gelbrich from hosting San Diego State.
In Flight B round-of-16 play, Dunn battled Tom Miller from Sacramento State. Dunn and Miller fought two close sets where Dunn came out on top and claimed the match, 6-4, 6-4, to advance to the quarterfinals. In his second match of the day Dunn took on Corey Smith from USC. The freshman from Tucson dropped the first set, 6-2, but came back to dominate the second set, 6-1. In the third set, Smith answered with a 6-1 victory to clinch the match. On Saturday, Dunn will compete for third place in Flight B, he will play Roy Brandys from Sac State.
Also in Flight B round-of-16 play, Bermudez took on Garrett Taylor from USD. Bermudez dominated the match, claiming a 6-0, 6-2 victory. In quarterfinal play, Bermudez took on Andranik Khachatryan from San Diego State. Bermudez clinched a close first set, 7-5, but Khachatryan came back to win the next two sets, 6-3, 6-4. With the loss, Bermudez falls to the Flight B Consolation bracket where has been matched up against Henrik Raag from Sacramento State.
In doubles round-of-16 play, Thompson and Dunn teamed up to take on Boyd and Jakob Karnopp from USD. The Arizona duo clinched the match, 8-2, to advance to quarterfinal play. On Saturday, Thompson and Dunn will play Spencer Simon and Gelbrich from San Diego State.
Bermudez and Urquidi teamed up to play the team of Matthew Kirby from Tulsa and Smith from USC. The Arizona duo claimed an 8-3 victory and will advance to quarterfinal play. On Saturday, Bermudez and Urquidi will play the Sacramento State team of Aliaksandr Malko and Marek Marksoo.
