The Arizona Wildcat men's tennis team sent four players to compete in the 2012 Aztec Invite hosted by San Diego State University. Mario Urquidi, Kieren Thompson, Carlos Bermudez and Matt Dunn are representing the Cats at Aztec Tennis Center.
After two days of play, Dunn claimed third in the Flight B singles draw and both doubles teams were eliminated after advancing to the quarterfinals and the semifinals, respectively.
On Sunday, Thompson and Bermudez competed in the singles Flight A and Flight B consolation semifinals.
In Flight A action, Thompson took on Andrew Raphaelson from USD. The junior from Brisbane, Australia defeated Raphaelson in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. The win advanced Thompson to the finals where he played Carill Salomon from UC San Diego. Salomon claimed the first set, 6-3, but Thompson answered with a 7-5 win in the second set. With the final match tied at one set apiece, the court entered a super-tiebreaker. The two fought a close battle but Rapaelson edged Thompson, 10-8.
In Flight B action, Bermudez battled Tom Miller from Sacramento State. The sophomore from Tucson defeated Miller in an eight game pro-set, 8-6. The win advanced him to the finals but the match was not played.
The Cats will be back in action on Oct. 19 when they travel to Irvine, Calif. for the ITA West Regional Championships.
