Women beat Boise State; Day 2 of Diving Concludes

TUCSON, Ariz. - Thirteen of the fourteen events were won by the Arizona women's swim team in their dual against Boise State on Saturday at Hillenbrand Aquatic Center.

Freshman Bonnie Brandon continued her success in leading the team with three individual first-place finishes. Brandon won the 1000 free (9:57.67), 50 free (23.48), and 200 back (1:58.22). Junior Margo Geer and seniors Chelsey Salli and Lauren Smart also made an impact with two individual first-place finishes apiece. Geer swam to a 1:50.63 in the 200 free, and a 49.37 in the 100 free. Salli won the 100 and 200 breast events with times of 1:02.20 and 2:15.90 respectively. Smart got first in the 100 back with a time of 55.08 and the 200 IM with a time of 2:06.14.

Other individual first-place finishes were achieved by junior Ashley Evans in the 200 fly (2:00.31) and senior Megan Lafferty in the 100 fly (55.66).

The women also won both relays on the day. Smart, Lafferty, and seniors Ellyn Baumgardner and Monica Drake won the 200 medley relay in 1:42.62. The 400 free relay was won in 3:24.56 by a team of all juniors: Briana Wilford, Grace Finnegan, Kait Flederbach, and Alana Pazevic.

Day 2 of the Arizona Diving Invite also occurred Saturday, and showcased the men's 3m championship and women's 1m championship at Hillenbrand Aquatic Center.

Senior Ashley Herrera dove well enough to earn a spot in the consolation final, and scored a 246.05 to get 5th in the 1m. On the men's side, sophomore Carter Craft also placed in the consolation final, scoring 349.50 to get 2nd. Freshman Rafael Quintero and sophomore Josh Bidak were able to get into the finals. Quintero placed 3rd overall with a score of 382.45, and Bidak got 8th with his score of 343.80.

The Arizona Diving Invite will wrap up on Sunday, Nov. 18 at Hillenbrand Aquatic Center, starting at 10:30 a.m. The events on Sunday will include the men's and women's platform dive championships. The Arizona men and women swimmers and divers will next travel to Austin, Texas for the U.S. Winter Nationals, taking place Nov. 29-Dec. 1.
