The Arizona Wildcat men's tennis team sent four players to compete in the 2012 Easley Memorial Classic in Las Vegas, Nev. Kieren Thompson, Carlos Bermudez, Ben Lee and Matt Dunn are representing the Cats at UNLV's At Fertitta Tennis Complex.
The tournament consists of two singles draws and a doubles draw with consolation play in each.
In Flight One singles, Dunn took on Ace Matias from UNLV in the round of 16. Dunn dropped the match, 6-2, 6-2. In consolation play the freshman from Tucson played NAU's Dominic Bermudez. Dunn clinched the match, 6-3, 6-3.
Thompson clinched two consecutive wins in Flight One singles, the two wins advance him to semifinal play. In the round of 16, Thompson battled Manfred Jeske from Arkansas. Thompson claimed the first set, 6-3, but Jeske answered with the next win, 6-3. The match entered a third set where the Arizona junior came out on top, 7-5. In quarterfinal play, Thompson played Gaston Cuadranti from SMU. The Brisbane, Australia native claimed the match in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4.
In Flight Two sinlges, Lee took on Bernard Schoeman from UNLV. The Arizona sophomore fell, 6-2, 6-1. C. Bermudez played Johannes Markel from UNLV in the round of 16. C. Bermudez was edged, 6-1, 6-3. Next, C. Bermudez battled Josh Levinson from NAU in consolation play. The Tucson native clinched the match in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3.
In doubles action, Thompson teamed up woth Dunn to play D. Bermudez and Alan Barrios representing NAU. The teams fought a close battle but the Arizona duo earned a tiebreak victory, 9-8 (2).
C. Bermudez and Lee formed the second Arizona team. The two took on Markel and Tamas Batyi from hosting UNLV. The Arizona duo was topped, 8-5.
Play will continue in Las Vegas beginning at 9 a.m. on Sat. Nov. 3.
