Kieren Thompson, Carlos Bermudez, Ben Lee and Matt Dunn traveled to Las Vegas, Nev. to represent the Arizona Wildcat men's tennis team at the 2012 Easley Memorial Classic. The tournament consists of two singles flights and one doubles flight, each feeding into consolation draws, and is held at UNLV's At Fertitta Tennis Complex.
Thompson topped two opponents in Friday's singles action to advance him to the Flight One semifinals. UNLV's Tamas Batyi stood between the Arizona junior and the Flight One finals. The two battled it out Saturday, Thompson dominated the first set, 6-0. In the second set, Batyi fought back but Thompson came out on top, 6-3. The win advances him to the event finals, set will be played on Sunday.
In Flight One consolation singles, Dunn battled Gregoire Lehmann from Arkansas. Dunn dropped the first set, 6-2, but fought back to force a tiebreaker in the second set. The freshman from Tucson dropped the set, 7-6 (4).
In Flight Two consolation singles,Bermudez took on Cody Miller from UNLV. The sophomore from Tucson defeated Miller in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1.Lee played Willie Sublette, also from UNLV. The two fought a close first set but Sublette edged Lee, 7-5. In the second set, Sublette once again edged Dunn to claim the match, 6-3.
In Flight One doubles quarterfinals, Thompson and Dunn played Bernard Shoeman and Ace Matias from UNLV. The Arizona duo was topped, 8-5.
In consolation doubles, Bermudez and Lee teamed up to play Tendal Tapfuma and Johammes Myburgh from Seminole State. Bermudez and Lee clinched the match, 8-5.
Play will continue on Sunday as Thompson competes for the Flight One singles championship.
